Methodology overview

Nonprofit Tools uses common nonprofit planning formulas and published sector benchmarks to create quick browser-based calculators. The tools are designed for early planning, board conversations, committee work and internal estimates.

The calculators do not replace professional advice. They give nonprofit teams a structured starting point before they finalize a budget, campaign plan, grant report or financial decision.

Sources and benchmarks

Where a calculator uses a benchmark, the explanation names the source or category of source. Examples include Charity Navigator and BBB Wise Giving Alliance standards for expense ratios, Independent Sector’s published value of volunteer time, Fundraising Effectiveness Project retention benchmarks and common gift-range-chart practices used in fundraising campaigns.

How formulas are used

Each calculator starts with a standard planning question. For example: What does this event need to earn to break even? How many gifts does this campaign need? What is donor retention worth? The calculator converts the question into inputs, applies the formula in the browser and shows the result in plain language.

Privacy and calculator inputs

Calculator inputs run in your browser. Nonprofit Tools does not upload, store or sell the numbers entered into the calculators. If you refresh or leave the page, the site does not keep a copy of your calculation.

Review process

We review calculator explanations and benchmark references periodically. If a public source changes, or if a user reports a correction with a reliable citation, we update the related tool.

Limits

These tools produce estimates. Final decisions should account for local rules, actual vendor quotes, grant terms, board policy, accounting guidance and legal requirements. For Form 990 reporting, audits, restricted funds, charitable gaming, raffles, tax filings or grant compliance, check with the appropriate professional.
