About Nonprofit Tools

Simple, free calculators for the numbers side of nonprofit work.

Nonprofit Tools was created by Ralph Perez, an IT and nonprofit technology leader with years of experience working inside the nonprofit sector. The site exists for the people who end up doing the math at small organizations: executive directors, development staff, board treasurers, event chairs, operations teams and volunteers.

The goal is simple: make common nonprofit planning calculations fast, understandable and usable without forcing people to download a spreadsheet or read a long guide before they can get an answer.

Why the site exists

Nonprofit teams make decisions with limited time and limited staff. A board wants to know whether a gala can break even. A grant asks for the value of volunteer time. A campaign committee needs a realistic gift table. A development director wants to know what donor retention is worth. These are practical questions, and they deserve practical tools.

Nonprofit Tools turns common formulas and sector benchmarks into browser-based calculators that produce quick planning estimates. The tools are not a replacement for professional advice, but they give nonprofit teams a better starting point than a blank spreadsheet.

Where the numbers come from

The calculators use common nonprofit planning formulas, fundraising conventions and published sector benchmarks where appropriate. Examples include Charity Navigator and BBB Wise Giving Alliance standards for expense ratios, Independent Sector’s published value of volunteer time, Fundraising Effectiveness Project retention benchmarks and gift-range-chart practices used in campaign planning.

Benchmarks change over time. When a public source updates, we review the related calculator and adjust the explanation or default value where needed.

How the site stays lean

The calculators appear near the top of each page because visitors usually come to solve a specific problem. Supporting notes, examples and methodology sit below the tool for people who want to understand the assumptions behind the result.

Privacy

Calculator inputs run in your browser. Nonprofit Tools does not receive, store or sell the numbers entered into the calculators.

Not professional advice

These are planning tools. They do not replace an accountant, auditor, attorney, grant officer or fundraising counsel, especially for Form 990 reporting, grant compliance, legal requirements or financial decisions with consequences.
